Takgården - an Asylum

Project description: Develop an architectural idea based on the structure you built in the Wood task. The main constellation in the project should be done in wood. Look deeper into the programme Asylum and the analyzes you have made, to consider which aspects interest you. In the room programme private rooms for different family situations, public indoor spaces, public outdoor spaces and circulation must be included.
The asylum is placed in a backyard, Hausmannsgate 37-39, in the centre of Oslo City, Norway.

Mine: An asylum for ten families, each with 1-6 children. I have chosen to remove one of the buildings on the site, preserving the rest of them. I have created five buildings, each divided vertically, creating two separate residents for two families. Two of the units are suitable for families that include a handicapped person. All the buildings have access to the green roof, through stairs or elevator. Entering the roof requires an invitation, as the only way to enter it is going through one of the buildings.

From top:
1) The feeling of being on the roof, model 1:200
2) Plan, the site and the area around, 1:500. The programme for the site includes a culture house, linking the near by Jakob Culture Church to the area. Church and culture house painted in blue.
3)  Early sketches included the idea of entering the roof and having the kitchens on the 1st floor.
4) An early section.
5) Plan, ground floor, 1:200. In the long, rectangular building, facing the street a cafe (public), a teaching room, an activity room for women, a youth club, a gymnastic centre and the mentioned culture house, may be located. This way the building will bind the asylum to the rest of the city. Inside the building that the five new units are lying on top of, a bakery is thought to be situated, making the small building at the left entrance, a place to sell baked goods. Next to this wholesale an herb garden may be located.
6) Plan, 1st floor, 1:200
7) Final section, 1:200
8) Benches may be placed on the roof, model 1:200
9) A spatial illustration of how it is to be situated at the 1st floor of one of the buildings, looking out of a big window, facing the long, rectangular building on the site. The light shining in on the left side is suppose to be filtrated by a wall made from glass and thin wood beams; an idea taken from my Wood project. The illustration is made by hand: I built a model, 1:50, of the 1st floor for one unite and then mounted paper clips done with water colours on top of the photo.

Project finished and presented on the 7th of March 2013.

Registrating sound

1) Project description: Recording sound while walking from Riad Dar Finn to Place Seffarine, using my Zoom H4. What I discovered: The metal doors of the closed shops in the Souk amplified every little sound in the area, making these the places with the highest volume.
2) Left overs from a graph that I made of my discoveries.
3) My registrations.
4) A small view from the graph I made.
